The Shenzhen Federation of Trade Unions recently issued a notice on promoting the construction of lactation rooms for new moms, focusing on promoting the construction of such rooms in enterprises with a large number of childbearing women, as well as in industrial parks, commercial buildings, medical and health systems, and other public places.

A Bao'an Daily reporter visited one lactation room at an enterprise in Guangming District. It is equipped not only with breastfeeding sofas, milk bottle sterilizers, and refrigerators for storing milk, but also female care products, cosmetics, and maternity and infant reading materials. It provides a safe, clean, and private place for pregnant and breastfeeding female employees.

According to the Guangming District Federation of Trade Unions, as of now, there are over 400 similar lactation rooms for new moms in the city, but the number still cannot meet the needs of female employees.

Such a lactation room will obtain a one-time special subsidy of 5,000 yuan(US$694.58) from the Shenzhen Federation of Trade Unions after it passes a review, Bao'an Daily reported.

For those recommended and shortlisted as model rooms by the Guangdong Federation of Trade Unions, they will be granted another special subsidy of 10,000 yuan.

Basic configuration for lactation rooms includes: an area no less than 10 square meters, non-slip floors, a diaper changing table with a safety restraint, a cold and hot water sink, hand sanitizers, a baby bed, a chair for breastfeeding and resting, a table or counter for placing baby items, a power socket, a trash bin, a door that can be locked, a privacy curtain for breastfeeding, constant temperature air conditioner or heater, diaper vending machines, emergency call equipment, etc.
